Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey is the first in one of my favorites trilogies. I'm writing this review after reading Lawrence Watt-Evan's humorous commentary of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series and in The Turtle Moves! It is the first novel in The Last Herald Mage series. It is the first in her “The Last Herald Mage” trilogy in her extensive Valdemar series. Magic's Pawn is the first book in The Last Herald Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey, and it's one of the books that made me fall in love with Fantasy in general. There's an old series called Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, and Magic's Price by Mercedes Lackey (her books in general are pretty gay-friendly, and there's a gay lady couple in one of her other early series, set in the same world. Now normally I would consider a Mercedes Lackey novel to be low-hanging fruit.
